Is it writer’s block if you don’t work on the book but blog?

Some would say that blogging is a waste of time that would better spent on novel writing. Probably true. But I want to tell you how it can be just the opposite.

After completing my first novel I sat back and “thought” for quite a while. I was content to reread it and tweak it from time to time, no forward progress. After completing the second novel I launched into the third one almost immediately.

Currently I’m revising #2 for publication. No, no offers yet, but I want it to be ready. And I’m over 1/2 of the way to getting the work done. But something – make that a series of somethings – killed the motivation to work on the book every day. Personal issues, work, the change in seasons, and the grind that editing truly is for me.

But the blog keeps me writing. I fully intend to bat out a few chapters of editing once I finish this post. I can bring myself to the computer more often if I blog. And if I’m here working on writing a blog I can transition to the novel. That seems like a good thing to me.

One reason many authors blog is to build a fan base. Helps when you go to sell books. This month will be the first month where I’ve exceeded 10,000 views on this blog. I want to thank all of you for dropping by and reading what I have to say.

Have a blessed day and I’ll be back tomorrow – maybe. Then again I might just take a day off and work on the book.

  1. Better to blog than not write at all!

To do anything well, you have to do it often.

Writing is a habit. Not writing can become a habit too.
