My Veteran’s Day Post: Better Late Than Never.

I was working on Veteran’s day. Driving across this great land of ours to shoot a television commercial. Worked the “day” job and then left to drive four hours to another state where we were going to shoot the commercial overnight in a closed sporting goods store. You do these things at three in the morning because it’s a major pain to the store and would completely disrupt the conduct of business. Cords, fat guys in red suits, lighting, cameras, assistants, craft services (food), trucks in the lot with all the gear. You tear the store up, set the scene, shoot the scene, and then tear it down before they open the next day. Ah, the magic of television. Once the commercial airs, I’ll give a link to it for you to watch. But it’s the stuff long days are made of and all actors live for in secret.

Now, to a previous persona I’ve had: veteran.

Let’s watch this video by Terry Kelly called A Pittance of Time first:

Yes, I did notice that it was Canadian Forces. But the simple fact is they celebrate the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month for the same reason we do. I feel a strong kinship with veterans of all armed forces for that reason.

Veteran’s day, to me, is more than a free meal. It’s a good day to think on the utter blessing that military service was to me. I was able to serve my nation. We defeated a great evil in the Soviet Union. I learned skills that still hold me in a job to this day. I learned about leadership, loneliness, struggle, joy, hard work, danger, and beer.

I don’t think of myself as an old man some times. I think of my friends in the military and we are forever frozen in our twenties. God, thank you for that set of memories. We’re all getting old, our generation is starting to die out from heart disease, cancer, suicide, and whatever else. But I will always remember the tang of salt air, the rush of exhaust gasses from the stack of a cruiser going in harm’s way, the sound of the diving horn, the roar of a catapult as a fully loaded A-6 roared off toward a hostile shore just six feet over my head, shared meals over an eighth of a mile underwater, the sound of the band in bars across Italy, the practical jokes on the new people, and the sweet taste of my wife’s lips after I’d been gone from home for far too long.

That’s what Veteran’s day means to me: my youth. I will grow old and die, but what I did for those five years serves my nation to this day. We are old and gray, but our memories will be of skinny young people in the prime of life.

I thank all of you who served. I think you know what I’m talking about. I remember the fallen as well, but I hold a special day for them in the spring: Memorial Day. This day, Veteran’s Day, is one of quiet joy for me.

Thank you for coming alongside my ship today to resupply on words. Now, emergency break away.

I have a favor to ask of my readers: would you kindly share this blog with your friends, family, and colleagues? We hit a million views in 2014, and while the readership continues a nice growth trend, it could be a lot better. Just hit the Facebook like button, share it on your timeline, tweet the blog with a link, and tell that person at the next desk that there’s this lunatic who writes about all sorts of stuff that they might like.

I appreciate your help. When we hit 2,000,000 readers I will give away something cool to a drawing from the subscribers (that’s the box on the right toward the top) who have helped promote this mess. No used sheets, probably not honey, more likely gift cards. Be a part of it. I’ll update from time to time where we’re at in the count. Thanks.

Commotion In The Few – Guest Blogger Jason B. Ladd

It’s a strange world writers live in, connections seem to be far more important than in other lines of work. Except maybe the Mafia. I guess that’s a tie-in for my guest blogger today, Jason B. Ladd. He’s not a member of the Fighter Mafia, but the guy can fly the snot out of hot jets.

I met Jason through another author a year ago. He was working on his book and seeking help/opinions/unwanted intrusion and commentary from writers with some military background. Some I’ve got. So we corresponded, I read the book, did some other stuff and now today I’m turning the blog over for his launch. Connections. Like being brothers in arms. Yeah, that kind of connection.

Without further delay, I present Jason B. Ladd. (And for the sake of all that I write about, go buy the man’s book, or get the free version. Yup, free. Do it today.)

Commotion in the Few

A curious thing happens to a man on the run.

His heart beats out of his chest. His muscles flex and release with a speed and strength formerly unknown.

He runs for his life knowing that if he his caught, his life will be changed forever.

Deep inside the soul of those few on the run is an unsettling–no, a commotion.

I fled Him, down the nights and down the days;
I fled Him, down the arches of the years;
I fled Him, down the labyrinthine ways
Of my own mind; and in the midst of tears

I was chased by the hound of heaven, and I ran.

But not very far. For no sooner had I found him in chase did I stop and ask myself why I was running.

I stopped. And then I followed. And my life was indeed changed forever.

I’ve written about my journey to become a Christian in a book that is releasing in a few weeks.

One of the Few: A Marine Fighter Pilot’s Reconnaissance of the Christian Worldview will be available on November 10th. For the uninitiated, that’s the Marine Corps birthday, and organization I served with on active duty for 14 years and serve still in the Reserves.

One of the Few is about my struggle with doubt during a search for truth and a reasonable defense of the Christian faith.

That’s the book in my own words. But here are some more words, written by professionals, that are supposed to draw you in:

A US Marine fighter pilot explores life’s important questions as he prepares for combat, searches for truth, and wages spiritual warfare during his mission to become a better husband and father.

Jason B. Ladd grows up in a military family with loving parents but spends his young life filled with spiritual apathy.

Ladd enters the US Marine Corps, becomes a fighter pilot, and sees combat in Iraq before life events align to nudge him into profound spiritual inquiry. Digging deep into his quest for truth, he realizes the art and science of fighter pilot fundamentals can help him on his journey.

Filled with stories that contrast his spiritual apathy with his post-Christian worldview passion, One of the Few is the compelling life story of a spiritual seeker engaged in a thrilling profession combined with a strong, reasonable defense of Christianity.

For fans of Ravi Zacharias, Lee Strobel, and Frank Turek, Ladd’s remarkable journey shares the transformative power of faith during a time when belief in God is dismissed and religious liberty in the military is attacked.

Before there can be a commotion in the pews, there must be a commotion in the soul.

Will you be one of the few to help me stir things up?

Say, What Gets Egg Off A Sailor’s Face?

Honestly, I thought Monday was the 10th when I wrote the last post. My life has already gone full metal Santa, and skills with calendars are out the window on the blog.

Tomorrow we have the big Marine Birthday Bash Blowout with guest blogger Jason Ladd. You know, free stuff, good story, etc?

I feel more stupid than usual messing up that date.

Somewhere, in Heaven, my dad is being abused by his fellow Marines that his oldest son blew the date by 24 hours.

I had the date right, just not the day of the week.

Sailors: screwing stuff up since forever. After all, why do you think Jesus had to walk out to the boat? That’s right, the crew left him on shore and couldn’t hack it without the skipper.

Nothing changes.

Stop back tomorrow for free stuff! But since you’re already here, you can click this link and go buy his book today. (If you can exhibit more self-control than me, wait for tomorrow for it to launch and then get it free!)

Tune In Monday – It’s The Marine Corps Birthday & I Have A Marine Officer As My Guest Blogger

That’s it. But there’s free stuff to be had. Yes, valued goods in celebration of his book launch.

Now, seriously, does it get better than the annual Marine Corps Brawl (well, some of them turn out that way) and Birthday celebration combined with free stuff?

First round on Msgt. Dusty. If she’s reading.

Join me in celebrating the finest Naval Infantry (and I seriously mean that as a compliment) in the world. I’d stand side by side with the Marines anywhere. I’ve been there and done that with my brothers and sisters in the Corps.

None finer.

Stop by Monday and see just how much loot you can abscond with.

Semper Fi, Marines.

It’s Probably Early To Start This Thread – But That’s The Way It Goes.

I’m sure you’re aware of the old expression “When it rains, it pours.” If not, that’s been my day for the last 48 hours. I have not taken so many phone calls, and had so many urgent emails in years.

Please follow me on Twitter, and “Like” the Facebook author page. Don’t forget to subscribe (the box is on the right side of the page) to be eligible for free e-books and other benefits!

I know better than to whine about having too many jobs offered to me. I am truly blessed to have four streams of income. I’m not rich, but God periodically turns on the faucet and floods the room with blessings.

I have successfully fended off several offers of work, and succumbed to four others in the last 48 hours. I am in the process of evaluating/being evaluated for several more. In each and every case it’s been an unexpected bonanza.

I realize others are struggling in this economy. I’d love to say it was all an overnight wonder, and that I don’t deserve any of it at all. But that’s not the case. I have legitimate first world problems.

I keep my contacts open with agencies for whom I do commercial work. I go where I’m told and do what’s asked of me most of the time. I’m on time, I’m early, I’m in costume/wardrobe/makeup, and I know my lines. My personal appearances as Santa have built a solid reputation for many years. My writing is now about to pay off (more on that very soon, I hope) and I have actually made some money as an author – yes, I’ll be asking you to buy something very soon. Just waiting for the publisher to release the contents of their December output.

But it makes me a bit crazy at the same time. November 4th is really early to be wound around the Santa axle. I took several calls on the old fat guy’s behalf today. Some were job related, some coaching to a new Santa, and one was advice to a person in search of a Santa. I helped all of them in some way, and probably will book a visit with the business that called with questions about hiring a Santa. Instead they wound up with a lesson in planning a Santa event – for free. I’ll probably get the job.

Combine that with a sequel that’s due at the end of this month (I’m forcing myself to do it during Nanowrimo) and computer problems, internet issues (Oh, sorry, didn’t mean to wipe out your wireless network by doing that, Sir) and general stuff like laundry, shopping, home repairs, winterizing the house and patio, and you have a raging psychotic mess on your hands by 1800. I will be in bed by 2130 tonight (writing this the day before) and glad for the chance to rest.

If the winning streak continues, Stormy will jump on the bed and snuggle up again tonight. First time ever was last night. Hopped on the bed at 1:30 and stayed all night. I cannot tell you what bliss that was for me. I woke up several times and thought it was my old guy, Edzell. The two of them have similar coats, and it was so darned nice to have a dog curled up with me. Even though I get the tail in my face. Strangely, her butt matches my beard.

Well and good. I feel better just recounting a bit of the madness today. Tomorrow it’s auditions, real job, more writing, further adventures in laundry, Yellow Jacket venom injections, and whatever else God chooses to throw at me in the course of events.

In the meantime, I leave you with Don Novello doing Santa’s Lament. I love this video. Be blessed, pray for me not to blow a fuse too early in the season, and thank you for reading.
