The traditional Thanksgiving Guacamole is ready.

Thanksgiving is gone, Santa kicks it into high gear tomorrow. But the day just passed needs to be discussed a bit. First, the guacamole:

My wife and I have done a lot of things over the years to celebrate Thanksgiving. One of the best is being welcomed into the homes of our friends Bob and Pat. We’ve spent the last two years with them and their families eating turkey and all the trimmings. But more than the food is the fact that we’ve been accepted into their lives for a special day. And, lest I forget, Christmas as well.

Friends like this surpass any expectations I had as a youth. They remind me that kindness and grace come in all political and economic stripes. They are Godly people with good hearts and I love them dearly.

So, before even the first day of the “new year” for giving thanks has come and gone, I have the first item on my list to be thankful for – Thanksgiving with the Kohl family.

Thanksgiving a quarter century ago.

This morning dawned with a wonderful warm November morning greeting my bleary eyes. It’s almost 50 degrees and I’m safe in my home in Saint Paul, Minnesota. 25 years ago today I was at sea on the U.S.S. Coral Sea some 4600 miles from my place of birth. All things considered, I’ll take Saint Paul. But the story of why I was in France and who I was with is important to me and I’d like to tell you that tale this morning. So go grab that second cup of coffee and make yourself comfortable. The tale continues below the fold. Continue reading

Santa Joe Updates.

Yes, indeed, it’s that time of year when you must endure the updates about Santa Joe. I am going to only post really good stories and new public appearances here, not every little candy cane that I gobble. I promise. I know it’s tedious to read it from other Santas and I won’t inflict that on you.

But there’s big news! A new tradition is starting in the Twin Cities and I’m proud to be a part of it in its inaugural year: Go Green Saturday

.

I’ll be starting the day at Bonnie’s Cafe

at Noon and visiting with young and old until Two in the afternoon.

I’ll then scoot down to see my friends at the Best Steak House from Three until Five.

They’re having a special deal and I talked with Mike (one of the owners) about it tonight. To say he’s genuinely excited about a new tradition starting this weekend is an understatement. The deal is a cheeseburger, fries, hot cocoa and pumpkin pie for just $4.99. I don’t usually directly promote business interests here (full disclosure: I did their website for years and know the family well) but these are great people (Bonnie’s as well, I’ve eaten there for many years.) Small businesses that have struggled mightily during the light rail construction and come out the other side. Please stop by and have your picture taken with me this Saturday.

And last, but not least by any means, I’ve been included in Kimberly Brown’s annual Christmas show. Kimberly is a very talented performer who’s been showcased around the world with great acclaim. We’ve been trying to coordinate Santa’s inclusion in the show for 3 years and finally made it happen. There will be two shows, one at 2:30 and the second at 6:30. Go to her website for details and tickets. Thank you, Kimberly, for including me in your show.

Santa makes his public debut on stage!

The saddest sight in Minneapolis.

I’m going back over to the couch to wash my brain with episodes of “Intervention” and try to forget my sorrows over the empty rack.
